I’m changing ideas again… and starting to think these thought entries may look like the ramblings of a creative maniac. Well, at least I am creative. Anyway –
This time I am leaning toward ‘reshoot’ or ‘revisit’ as I am considering the physical reshooting of a project I began work on in October 2024, and have been yet to complete; then I lost the footage I had edited and now am simply left with the raw files, however I now have better knowledge of a newer camera, as well as having changed some of the ideas slightly. I would be really keen to reshoot the idea again now.
The project itself is based around a spoken word poem I wrote and edited in August 2024, about my own relationship with London. I would like to compile footage from different places I have memories of within London, and have the poem accompany the video as voice-over. Some issues I believe I will encounter are down to the seasons in which I’m attempting to film. Ideally I would like to film all year long, to cover, and candidly show London throughout the year. A lot of the verses refer to seasonal aspects of life in London, such as Christmas lights, and summers spent in parks.
I am leaning still toward this idea for now, as I have so much enthusiasm for the project itself, as well as for London. I have spent the majority of my life living in, or on the outskirts of London. Even as a child I was fascinated by the diverse city I lived in which was so constantly busy. The idea of ‘anything goes’ here has always appealed to me; I like how acceptable it is to wear anything you want from one day to the next, and that however outlandish it may seem, you’re still more likely to be complimented or just left alone than insulted.
Although a sort of ‘Love Song for London’ (which is actually the poem’s title), my experience of the city is just that; it is my experience alone, and I cannot speak as anyone else, though, I am able to use my position as an artist to talk openly about difficulties some people face living in London. For example, in the poem itself I discuss racism, financial difficulties, homelessness, and politics. Personal and social context drive this work, and this is what I wish to convey through the development of this piece.
